Who Will Win the Mens Singles at Wimbledon 2023?

With Royal Ascot in the books for another year, the next major sporting event of 2023 sees attention turn from the turf of the Berkshire racecourse to the lush grass of SW19. There are no surprises at the head of the market. Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic is the red-hot favourite for this year’s event. Winning back-to-back in 2014 and 2015, and 2018 and 2019, the 36-year-old Serb is yet to win three in a row but certainly won’t be lacking motivation. Already the most successful player in the history of Grand Slam tennis, should Djokovic win this, he will join all-time leader Roger Federer on eight wins in the event.

Father time does, of course, catch up with us all eventually, and there were those beginning to doubt Djokovic following a slow start to the season. Always the man for the big occasion, Novak responded to those detractors with a hugely impressive run to claim the French Open title for a third time. Taking time off since that success, he will arrive fresh and will likely take some stopping back on his favourite surface.

Carlos Alcaraz

At the other end of the age spectrum comes 20-year-old Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz. Claiming the US Open title during a dominant 2022, the then 19-year-old became the youngest ever World Number 1 – a status he retains heading into this one.

Considering his exceptional backcourt game, Alcaraz looks like a natural heir to the clay court throne once Rafa Nadal finally calls it a day. He will, therefore, likely have been disappointed to fall at the semi-final stage at Roland Garros – his conqueror being non-other than Novak Djokovic. However, that experience against a big name on the big stage can only serve him well and, having shown his capability on a quick surface on numerous occasions, he rates a major threat to all.

Jannik Sinner

• Nationality - Italian

Another of the emerging squadron of young players, 21-year-old Italian Sinner has earned praise from no less a figure than Roger Federer in regard to the quality of his ground game, whilst his ability to transition around the court has been likened to the brilliant movement of Novak Djokovic. Sinner hasn’t quite achieved the results to match that level of praise – at least not at Grand Slam level – but many in the game believe it is only a matter of time until he makes his presence felt on the biggest stage.

Already a Quarter Finalist at all four Slams, he made an impressive run to the last eight here twelve months ago – seeing off the monster serve of John Isner and mastering Carlos Alcaraz before going two sets up on Djokovic, only to lose in five. Still improving, he seems likely to go well, but a recent retirement at Halle is a little concerning.

Daniil Medvedev

Russia’s number 1 and world number 3 Daniil Medvedev is no stranger to making a deep run in a slam event, with the 27-year-old having made the final of the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022, and won the U.S. Open in 2021. That fast court prowess suggests Wimbledon should suit, but he is yet to make it beyond the fourth round in four previous attempts.

On the plus side, Medvedev is a serial winner, with 20 career titles to his name, and can be counted upon to handle the pressure in the big moments. Following a solid start to the campaign, his form has dipped slightly – notably in his first-round defeat at the French - but, if bringing his A-game, he can never be dismissed.

Alexander Zverev

Germany’s Number 1 Alexander Zverev was tipped by many to be a future Grand Slam winner following an impressive Junior career. Now 26 years old, the right-hander is yet to truly deliver on that potential – coming closest when losing out to Dominic Thiem in the 2020 US Open Final.

It is by no means too late for Zverev yet though and, following a spell in the doldrums, he has looked much more like his old self of late – reaching the semi-finals in each of his last three events, including the French Open. Boasting a combination of a big serve, excellent baseline play, and an ability to serve and volley, he possesses all the tools needed - if he is able to put it all together.

Wimbledon Men’s Singles Best Bets

It’s difficult to oppose Novak Djokovic for win purposes. In fine form at the French, one of the greatest players to ever pick up a racket rates the most likely winner. Alexander Zverev is an interesting each-way option at a big price, but we prefer the claims of the classy Jannik Sinner. If avoiding Djokovic in the draw, it would be no surprise to see the young Italian make the final.
