What is a Sports Betting Middle and How Easy is it to Use?
One strategy you may or may not have heard of is betting in the middle, or as some refer to it, middling. The basics of this are as follows;
Place two bets on the same two-way betting market covering both eventualities, but with the possibility of both bets winning at the same time.
Some people may have just read that and thought it can’t be done, but here is how you middle.
The Scenario to Place a Middle Bet
The key to this bet is finding markets that are going to change. A two-way market is required, and one that you think may change due to news later in the week. The best market to use is a handicap line, these are available on many sports and are popular with those betting on rugby, NFL, NBA and much more.
The First Middle Bet
Your first bet needs to happen before the market moves, let’s use the NFL as an example here. You back the New England Patriots -5.5 on the handicap line to beat the Green Bay Packers. This is the first bet you place based on what you think will happen in the game. If the Pats win by six or more then you win, if they lose, draw or win by five or less then you lose.
The Second Middle Bet
Later in the week before the game takes place, Green Bay suffer a couple of key injuries that makes their chances of winning this game smaller. Due to this the betting markets react, so New England are now -8.5 on the handicap line, and the Packers are +8.5. The second bet to place is to go opposite what you did before, which means you are backing the Packers +8.5 here.
The Returns from a Middle Bet
You have placed two bets on the game, and with these handicap lines you should get odds of just below evens, which means if one of your two bets wins you will make a small loss, if they both win you will make a nice profit. Due to the way you have placed your bets, it is impossible for both to lose, so you will either make a tiny loss or a big profit, and here is how:
Let’s go back to the first bet, if the Patriots win by six points or more then that bet is a winner, if they win by five or less then it is a loser. Then your second bet, to be a loser this needs the Patriots to win by nine or more, while it is a winner if they win by eight or less.
The key area is the middle ground, which is why this bet is called a middle. If the Pats win by six, seven or eight points then both of your bets will be winners, even though you are betting on opposite sides of the game.
How to Place a Middle Bet
The hardest part of placing a middle bet is identifying games where the lines are going to change. However, lines do change and this is especially the case with new betting sites. These keep a keen eye on the news ahead of games so they can adjust their odds and lines accordingly.
They are making these adjustments to protect themselves and reflect the news they have heard, but they open opportunities for people to take advantage and secure potentially high rewarding middle bets for little risk.
