Waddle: Rashford needs to leave Man Utd; I can see why he was left out of the England squad (interview for Newbettingsites.UK)
Former Premier League winger Chris Waddle has told NewBettingSites.uk that he understands Lee Carsley’s decision to leave Marcus Rashford out of his first England squad because the Manchester United forward has become too comfortable at Old Trafford.
Read more on what he had to say below.
Marcus Rashford doesn’t do enough
I can see why Lee Carsley has left Marcus Rashford out of the England squad, he doesn’t do enough. On his game, he’s a terrific player, as we saw two years ago when he scored over 30 goals, he was on fire that season – that’s what you want out of him.
Since then, we haven’t seen that. Last season he didn’t do it, and he hasn’t so far this season either. I don’t know whether it’s a lack of desire or passion, it just feels as if he’s not even on the pitch sometimes. He doesn’t look like he cares. He hasn’t been there over the last season and the start of this season.
I think Manchester United should have sold him two years ago after that electric season, that was the right time – he needs a move away. He’s been at United his entire life and sometimes players just get comfortable – I think that’s what it is. Erik ten Hag will be thinking, ‘I know what this kid is capable of’ but he just doesn’t do it.
Sancho can’t handle the Premier League
Former Man Utd teammate of Rashford, Jadon Sancho, has been shipped out on loan to Chelsea, but Waddle reckons he should have stayed abroad, as the style of play in England’s top flight is too physical and quick for him.
I do believe that Jadon Sancho has ability. I just think his game is suited to abroad and not the Premier League. The Premier League is too quick and physical for him. I’ve not really seen a game where he’s played well in a Manchester United shirt and you can actually say, ‘how good was he today’. I think going back to Borussia Dortmund took all of that pressure back off him and he relished that.
I think he’s better off playing in France, Spain or Germany. Slower games suit him, and the Premier League requires a lot of work and it’s too much to ask from him – I don’t think it’s his game. If Chelsea can get something out of him, then fair play, but if he wants to get back into the England squad and be a top player, he’s better off playing in Europe.
Casemiro was a bad signing; United just aren’t good enough
Commenting on Manchester United’s woes of late, Waddle highlighted that Casemiro, who blundered twice gifting a brace to Luis Diaz in their 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford, wasn’t a good signing and the pace of play in the Premier League is too much for him to handle.
I wouldn’t have bought Casemiro. When you talk about the difference in leagues across Europe, he was playing for a Real Madrid team who took control of possession every game, United don’t – it’s end to end with them.
The Premier League is too quick for him and he wasn’t a good buy for them. He’s a good player, we know that from his time at Real, but there’s too much pace in the game for him to stay at that level at United.
Waddle also mentioned how the club has been in a steady decline since the departure of Alex Ferguson, which has seen them fall down the Premier League ranks.
United aren’t good enough. You look at Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and even Newcastle and Tottenham, United just aren’t good enough. There are plenty of teams that are better than Man Utd and people have got to accept this. The only way they’ll be good enough is if they buy the top players.
Erling Haaland went to Man City, but back in the day he would have gone to Man Utd. Everything about Man Utd is going to be in that top category, but if you haven’t got that team on the pitch, you’re going to get criticism.
I feel for Erik ten Hag because since Alex Ferguson walked out that door, everyone has struggled. Their rivals have all just stepped up above them and at the moment they’re just the football clubs that are being run better. They’ve got everything you need to be a massive club, but the level on the pitch needs to be better.
