Markus Babbel: No doubt Liverpool can challenge for Premier League title this season ( Exclusive Markus Babbel Interview)
Speaking to NewBettingSites.uk, ex-Liverpool defender Markus Babbel gave his thoughts and predictions ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, which will be Arne Slot’s first in charge of Babbel’s former side.
The German defender won five trophies in his four years at Anfield and he believes Slot’s side can challenge for another this season, suggesting that Jurgen Klopp has left behind a good enough squad to battle for the Premier League title.
Babbel said: “I am 100% sure that Liverpool will fight for the Premier League title this season. I have a really good feeling going into the new season and everything at the club looks positive at the moment.
“Arne Slot is a new manager, he is not Jürgen Klopp and we all need to accept this. Everybody loved Klopp but he is in the past now and you have to look to the future. Klopp did an amazing job last season to bring really talented players to the club, he hasn’t left it in a mess. It is not like when Alex Ferguson left Manchester United and the squad was very old and not good enough.
“The balance between young and old players is brilliant. Now they have a new voice in the dressing room and a manager who wants to continue to play on the front foot. He knows how to manage at a big club because Feyenoord is a big club. I’m not scared about the new season, I have a fantastic feeling about it.”
Liverpool must always be fighting for trophies
Babbel won both the FA Cup and League Cup during his time on Merseyside and he suggested that, although it is easier to win those competitions than the Premier League, he feels Liverpool can and must fight for the league title as a priority.
“Liverpool always have to be fighting for the title,” said Babbel. “This current squad is capable of winning the title. I don’t believe that Slot will be telling them that simply finishing in the top four is good enough. He is a hungry manager, he won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord and he will want to continue to win titles.
“He is the right man for the job and I truly believe they will fight for a trophy this season. I really think they can challenge for the Premier League title.
“Winning the FA Cup or League Cup is easier than winning the Premier League, but I still believe they will fight for the league title.”
Man City can’t keep winning the Premier League
Manchester City will be chasing a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title this season, but Babbel doesn’t believe their winning streak can go on forever.
“Manchester City cannot go on winning the title for the next 10 years,” he said. “I don’t think that will happen. Arsenal are obviously very strong, but so are Liverpool.
“Then you still have to look out for other teams who could threaten those three. Manchester United, Chelsea Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle will all be fighting for the top four, so it will be tough. Liverpool is a special club and they have a lot of talent in this current squad.”
