Lee Sharpe: United fans want Rashford to stay, but he must leave if his heart isn’t in it (interview for Newbettingsites.uk)
Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has told NewBettingSites.uk that he believes United fans want Marcus Rashford to stay at the club and succeed, but he should leave if his heart is no longer in it.
Speaking to NewBettingSites.uk, Sharpe said: “Whether Marcus Rashford wants to stay at Manchester United long-term and be a big player for them going forward is for him to decide. I don’t think anybody wants him to leave the club, they just want him to show the best version of himself. He was unplayable two seasons ago, so we all know he has that in his locker and the fans just want that back.
If his recent goals have helped towards that then United could be on the verge of having him back firing, which would be like a new signing. If he gets back to his best then everyone will want him to stay, but if he doesn’t want to be there and his heart isn’t at United anymore, then it’s best that they part ways. If he performs like he did two seasons ago, though, then I don’t think anyone at the club will want him gone.
United shouldn’t let Maguire go, they won’t find anyone better
Harry Maguire is another who was out of the starting XI against Southampton, but Sharpe feels that United should keep hold of their captain, although he may want to leave for the sake of his England career.
“I’d imagine Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt are Erik ten Hag’s first-choice centre-back pairing,” said Sharpe. “Then they have Leny Yoro, who I’d imagine will be phased into the team eventually. The back four was constantly changing last year and that makes me believe that Harry Maguire still has a big role to play at United. He’ll get his fair share of games this season through injuries and suspensions.
“His experience, calmness, and wisdom around the club is valuable to everyone. I don’t think United will be in any rush to get rid of him, it will just be down to whether he feels he needs a change. He may want regular first team football for the sake of his international career. I wouldn’t let him go and I don’t think you’d be able to replace him with anyone better.”
Casemiro is still a vital member of United’s squad
Despite rumours that the club may be looking to move him on, Sharpe insisted that United should keep Casemiro as his experience and knowledge of the game will be vital for the team.
“I think Casemiro’s time as a starter for United is possibly coming to an end,” the former United man said. “It depends on the opponent and who Ten Hag wants to pick, but he may not start too many more games. Manuel Ugarte has also joined in a similar role and he looks to have more legs and energy.
“Casemiro will still be valuable in the dressing room and coming off the bench, especially given his experience. He still reads the game at a high level as we saw in his cameo against Southampton last weekend. The quality and weight of pass is still there for him. He can still be useful in the last 15 or 20 minutes of a game where they’re winning and need to settle things down.
“He still has a role to play. He’ll be vital for the younger lads in the dressing room and the rest of the team. His experience and knowledge are invaluable and they’re a big reason as to why United should look to keep hold of him. Even if he’s not on the pitch, having him in the dressing room and on the training ground will be no bad thing. He’ll be a vital member of the squad this season.”
