Chris Waddle: If you give Solanke chances, he will score goals (interview for Newbettingsites.uk)
Former Tottenham winger Chris Waddle has told NewBettingSites.uk that the signing of former Bournemouth frontman Dominic Solanke will be good for Spurs but any injury could leave them exposed in that position which means Richarlison might have to step up.
Read more on what he had to say below.
Dominic Solanke fits the Spurs build, someone will end up paying daft money for him
Dominic Solanke fits the Tottenham build. He’s a young player who did very well at Bournemouth and got his move to Spurs. They’ll be thinking that in two or three years’ time, if he’s scoring goals regularly, someone will offer daft money for him! Tottenham are a selling club, they buy, then develop, then sell.
Those who’ve gone to Spurs and have been good, have all gone eventually. They’ve gone down that line of buying young talent and Solanke had a great season last year and could’ve got off the mark quite easily in their opening game against Leicester. If you give him chances, he will score goals.
If he’s injured, though, who do you put in? For me, Richarlison is a trier and an honest kid, but he won’t get you 20 goals – I’m not a big fan of his. They’ve had some good young players develop over the last year who they’ve loaned out and they could return in a year or two but with their current squad, they’re weak up front.
There’s a lot resting on James Maddison this season
Waddle reckons Tottenham playmaker James Maddison will be feeling the pressure this season as his performances last term failed to earn him a place in the England squad for Euro 2024 and that he’ll have no choice but to come out of the blocks quickly this year.
James Maddison got an assist against his old club Leicester in the opener and Tottenham do have a good midfield with some pace on the wings with Heung-Min Son and Brennan Johnson. There’s a lot resting on Maddison this season. Last year, he didn’t really perform and didn’t make the England squad which I’m sure has been a bit of an eye opener for him so I think he’ll come out of the blocks quickly this year.
If he does that, Spurs could get off to a really good start and Maddison will be a big part of that. I just hope he can find that consistency in form that he showed when he first arrived at the club.
Spurs’ squad can get them in the top four this season
Having finished just outside the top four last season, Waddle reckons that given Tottenham manage to keep consistent, Ange Postecoglou’s side can make third or fourth this season.
I think Tottenham performed well against Leicester in the opener but they looked vulnerable with a high line at the back, but that’s just how Ange Postecoglou plays. It’s exciting football when they’re going forward and have got the ball back, so I expect them to improve this year and I think they’re in the pack for the top four.
Whether their squad is strong enough, we will wait and see, I just don’t know if some of their young players are ready yet. They’re a squad that could contend for third or fourth, but, as like the seasons of late, consistency is their main problem.
